It is with profound sadness and grief that we announce the death of Paula Fornara, former multidisciplinary team member and founding developer and director of the Denton County Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners program. Paula passed peacefully on the morning of April 7, 2021 after a courageous battle with Primary Progressive Aphasia, a dementia disease.
Paula always had a heart of service and care beginning with her entering the field of nursing in 1969. For over 30 years she served the community as an emergency room nurse before being approached in 1998 to begin a program to care for and provide medical and evidentiary support to adults and children who were survivors of sexual assault and abuse. By partnering with local hospitals, Denton County Friends of the Family and the Children's Advocacy Center for Denton County she built a forensic nursing program founded on compassion and support for the most vulnerable of our community which formally began its partnership and services in 2001. For over a decade she oversaw, fostered, grew, collaborated, advocated, taught, testified and poured her heart into the multidisciplinary team ensuring that every patient received the best care she had to offer, and every team member was supported in the hard work they do each day. Paula retired in 2013 but continued to reminisce and speak fondly of her job as a SANE, and she advocated and cared for others as the nurse and mom she always will be in our hearts. Paula is survived by Frank, her husband of 46 years, son, Sean, and her daughter, Alyssa, and two grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, we request you honor the memory of Paula through donations to Denton County Friends of the Family to continue to support the SANE program.
